This year, the freedom awards were awarded to Mazen Darwish from Syria, three priests from the Central African Republic, Dr. Denis Mukwege from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Human Rights Watch.
Angela Merkel was awarded with the International Four Freedoms Award.
